Obituary

PHYLLIS GAIL HOPKINS, 87, lifelong resident of Udall, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, October 21, 2012 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Born on October 10, 1925 in Udall, she was the daughter of Carl Morgan and Reba Mae (Cook) Hopkins. She was raised on a farm near Udall and at a young age helped her Grandpa Cook in the orchard and tending bees. She received her education in Udall where she graduated from Udall High School in 1942. Phyllis began her teaching career at 17, teaching in a one room school outside of Udall. In the summers she loved helping on the farm especially with the harvest. In 1946 she attended Bethany Nazarene College and graduated in 1950. She later took continuing education classes through Southwestern College in Winfield.

She taught in Udall, Larned and Great Bend, Kansas as well as Bethel, Akron and Whittier Elementary. She retired in 1991 from Whittier Elementary where she was a second grade teacher.

Phyllis was a charter member of the Udall Nazarene Church, becoming a member in 1940 and had helped in every capacity through the years. She taught and directed Vacation Bible School for several years and was a Sunday school teacher until August of this year.

Her family includes:
Her cousins: Gaillard and Eileen Hopkins, Jewel and Ray Lacey, Linda Morton. Joyce Brookings, Ross Rennick, Caroline Miller, Barbara Seaman and many friends. She was loved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the Udall Nazarene Church. Interment will follow at Udall Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.

A memorial has been established in Ms. Hopkins name for Missions at the Udall Nazarene Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
