Phyllis H. Black, 93, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Saturday morning, November 5, 2016 at Winfield Senior Living.
Born February 12, 1923 in Belle Plaine, Kansas, she was the daughter of Minta Grace (Curfman) and Harold Wilson "Herb" Wright. She attended Winfield schools. She later attended Southwestern College. She was united in marriage to Robert Charles Black on March 5, 1942 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. The couple moved to Carmel, California while Bob was in the Army and later lived in Little Rock, Arkansas before making their home in Winfield. Phyllis worked as a Lab Technician at Snyder Clinic for 33 years, retiring in 1995.
Bob and Phyl played in the Los Angeles Symphony. Phyllis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the church choir and was also a friend of the First Christian Church. She was also involved in the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary, the Eve Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing in the City Band for 59 years, as well as quilting, crafting and reading. Mr. Black preceded her in death.

Her daughters: Linda Burfield and husband, Jack of Ft. Worth, TX; Barbara Black of Winfield; Tina Penny and husband, Tom of Thornton, CO;
Her grandchildren: Brady Sweetland, Buffy Christian, Justin Combs; Jason Black, Taylor Black; and
Her great grandchildren: Zach Combs; Jarod Sweetland; Keaton Christian; Aidan Christian; and Tate Christian.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Services will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Private family burial will take place at a later date. A reception will be held immediately following the service at 906 E 9th Ave in Winfield. All friends are invited.
Memorials have been established in Phyllis' name for the Dementia Society of America and the National Eye Institute. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
