Phylis J. Silvis, 92, of Andover, Kansas, passed away early Thursday morning, April 30, 2026, at The Mapleton Assisted Living in Andover.
Born July 28, 1933, in the Atlanta, Kansas community, she was the daughter of Ralph M. and Eva L. (Reeves) Adams. She was raised and received her early education in the Atlanta community before moving to Olivet, Kansas with her family during her freshman year of high school. She attended Olivet High School, graduating in 1951. After graduation, she went to work for the State of Kansas in a secretarial position.
She was united in marriage to Glenn W. Silvis on February 12, 1956, in Topeka, Kansas where the couple made their first home. The family moved frequently with Glenn’s career in the Air Force. Phylis worked in Accounts Payable for Government Service while stationed at Lajes Field-Azores, Portugal. She also worked in Accounts Payable for D&M Railroad while the family was stationed in Oscoda, Michigan. After Glenn’s honorable discharge and retirement from the Airforce, the couple moved to Rose Hill, Kansas and Phylis went to work for Wonder Bread until retiring as Accounts Payable Clerk in 1993. Mr. Silvis preceded her in death on May 3, 2000.
Phylis was a member of the Methodist Church. In addition to her work, she enjoyed gardening, camping with family, volunteering at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Her family includes her son Duane W. Silvis and wife, Rayanne of Augusta; Cynthia D. Kerr of Andover; Pamela R. Silvis-Zelasko and husband, Daniel of The Villages, FL; her brother Melvin Adams and wife, Pam of Andover; her sister Patricia Oldfather of Yuma, AZ; her grandchildren Shannon Wallace and husband, Jay; Jay Jay Kerr; Wesley Kerr and wife, Nicole; Selena Walker and husband, Brandon; Danielle Herring; Shawn Silvis and wife, Lyndsey; Nicholas Kerr and wife, Allie; James “J.D.” Utash; Christina Piersall and husband, Michael; Allyson Ort; and Kimberly Himmer; and her great grandchildren, Gabriella Walker, Wesley Silvis, Coleton Walker, Wyatt Silvis, Wager Silvis, Averie Kerr, Brady Kerr, Madelyn Kerr, Brody Kerr, Vivian Kerr, Liam Kerr, Haley Piersall, Hudson Piersall, Grayson Utash, Noah Utash, Tyme Wallace, Dusk Wallace, Zoey Himmer, and Rylee Ort.
In addition to her parents and husband, Phylis was preceded in death by a brother Robert “Bob” Adams and a sister Margorie Gardner.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 4, 2026, at Hope Community Church in Andover, Kansas, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Wilmot Cemetery north of Winfield.
Memorials have been established in Phylis’ name for the Alzheimer’s Association of Wichita and for Good Shepherd Hospice in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
