Obituary

Phillip "Max" Lumbert, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, September 14, 2019 at William Newton Hospital.

Born May 12, 1938 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Vernon Fred and Alice Nadine (Archer) Lumbert. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1956. After school he joined the United States National Guard.

Max was united in marriage to Gwen Parish at the First Baptist Church of Burden in the early 1960s. The couple made their first home in Winfield and Max worked for Parish Chevrolet in Burden. He later worked for a short time for General Electric and Boeing before moving to Frog Hollow in 1968 where he began selling chainsaws and opened Lumbert Auto Salvage. Max and Gwen had two children and later divorced. Max enjoyed being a salesman and loved spending time with and talking to people.

On January 3, 2007 Max was united in marriage to Kathryn "Kay" Whitson in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Winfield where max continued running Lumbert Auto Salvage. He enjoyed taking trips to Branson, riding motorcycles, and attending the state fair.

His family includes his wife Kay of Winfield; his son Brent Lumbert and wife, Kelley of Winfield; his daughter Deann Setzkorn and husband, Greg of Cambridge; his brother Howard Lumbert and wife, Linda of Winfield; his grandchildren, Tristan Sengkham and husband, Ricky of Wichita; Taylor Young and husband, Tyson of Winfield; Teall Lumbert and partner, Kolton Price of Winfield; Ryan Lietzke of Winfield; Lauren Turner of Salina; his great grandchildren, Ryker Young, Tinley Price, Kylie Turner, and Kamden; and his two step-children, four step-grandchildren, and four step-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his sister Carole Grant.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Max's name for the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
