PHILIP S. MILLER, 81, of rural Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday morning, April 21, 2012.
Born on October 22, 1930 at the family residence on the Miller farm, he was the son of Perry & Sarah Miller. Philip was privileged to live all his live in the house where he was born. He attended a one room country school at Victor Point, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1948.
He was united in marriage to Alene Graham on July 3, 1954. Philip was a farmer/rancher in Tisdale and Sheridan townships. His creativity led to designing and making his own farm machinery. There was nothing mechanical that he could not fix. In addition to farming, he spent 27 years employed as Power Plant Operator for the City of Winfield, retiring in 1993.
Philip was baptized in 1930 and active at Tisdale United Methodist Church all his life. His mission work included a trip to Alaska to help build a church as well as Parsons, Kansas and Tisdale to help clean up tornado debris. He also worked in flood clean up at St. Jo, Missouri, helped build both the old church gym and new gym, and helped neighbors. He and Alene were youth sponsors for several years and planned sponsored "Tisdale Family Camps" in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
He enjoyed fishing and camping on Silver Creek with neighborhood friends, trips to historical attractions and scenery and reading books on History, Nature, Westerns written by Louis Lamour and Religion. Philip enjoyed music and sang in church choir as well as a quartet, and was a Tisdale 4-H Club leader. In 1958, he was involved in a plane crash in which all 4 passengers survived.

His grandchildren: Molly Weathers and husband Tyson, Kristin Priest and husband Brad, Sarah Owens and husband Sladden, Katie (Copeland) Pina and husband Nick, Kelly Copeland, Maggie Hoefler and husband Jeff, Ally Pines, Ryan Copeland and Isaac Copeland and wife Soni;
His 8 great-grandchildren; and
A host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Alice (Miller) Kurtz, his brother, Ralph Miller, and his half sisters, Mabel Williard, Leona Cranston and Ruthella Evans.
A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Tisdale United Methodist Church east of Winfield. Interment will follow at Tisdale Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service form 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 24, 2012. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., that evening.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Miller's name for Tisdale United Methodist Church.
