Obituary

PAULINE DOROTHY CALES, 93, long time resident of Winfield, passed away Friday morning, May 15, 2009 at her home.

Pauline was born March 1, 1916 to James Giles and Dorothy Margaret Cochran in the Hackney community, south of Winfield. She lived there until she was 16 years old. She went to work in Winfield, staying with different children while the parents were working.

In 1940, Pauline started working in cafes, until she met Ralph Cales. Ralph and Pauline were married on January 22, 1944. They left a few days later for North Carolina, where Ralph was stationed in the United States Army. Pauline returned to Winfield in May of 1944 when her husband left for overseas. She has lived the rest of her life and raised her family in Winfield.

In the late 1950's, she worked in several cafes and at Winfield Laundry and Dry Cleaning, and McClellan's. Pauline retired in 1971.

Pauline was a member of Central Baptist Church. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Women's Bowling League in Winfield from 1970 to 1994. She also enjoyed doing puzzle books and watching game shows and soap operas on television.

Her family includes:
Her sons: Jerald Cales and wife, Jimalene of Winfield; Warren Cales and wife, Dianne of Winfield; and R. LeRoy Cales Jr. and wife, Tracy of Florida;
Her daughters: Suzy Atherton and husband, Gale of Topeka; Sharon Flower and husband, Clif of Winfield; Barbara Leffew and husband, Clayton of Winfield; and Glenda Brown and husband, Larry of Winfield;
Her sister-in-law: Bea Cochran of Hays, KS;
Her 20 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ralph Cales, 3 brothers, 1 sister, 3 grandsons, 1 great grandson, and 1 great granddaughter.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday May 19, 2009, at the New Salem Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Monday evening from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.

Memorials have been established in Mrs. Cales' name for the American Diabetes Foundation, and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
