Obituary

Patrick “Pat” Murphy, 69, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 15, 2026, at William Newton Hospital, following a short illness.

Born September 12, 1956, in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of Max Eugene and Luella LaGene (Murrell) Murphy. He moved around with his family until settling in Udall and graduating Udall High School in 1975.

He was united in marriage to Peggy Ann Wallsmith on December 14, 1975, in Sedan, Kansas. The couple made their home in Winfield where Pat began working for the State of Kansas in 1977.

Pat began his career at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in the maintenance department for a short time before working in the power plant for many years. Following the closing of the state hospital, Pat began working at the Correctional Facility. He worked in many capacities at the facility including power plant, security, officer, laundry supervisor, and maintenance. He received his 50 year pin this year from the State of Kansas.

Pat was a sports fanatic. He loved all things sports related and enjoyed playing sports, coaching sports, and watching sports. He also enjoyed teasing his nieces and nephews.

His family includes his wife Peggy Murphy of Winfield; his daughter Kate Thompson and husband, Jacob of Arkansas City; his brothers, Douglas Murphy and wife, Debbie of Harper; Richard Murphy and wife, Mary of Winfield; and Thomas Murphy; his first grandson Damon Patrick Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Pat was preceded in death by a son Tyson and a step-brother Max Eugene, Jr.

Services are pending with Miles Funeral Service and will be announced at a later date. Private burial will take place at Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Pat’s name for the Winfield Recreation Center for youth sports. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
