OPAL McCONAGHY, 101, of Oxford, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.
Born on August 18, 1907, in the rural Atlanta, Latham area, she was one of seven children of Virgil and Marian (Cunningham) Taylor. She attended Old Salem school, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1926. She taught in rural schools north of Winfield, including Red Valley and others for 9 years.
Opal was united in marriage to Frank McConaghy at her parent's home in rural Winfield on April 24, 1935. They made their first home on a farm north of Winfield. The couple farmed in Hooser and Udall before moving to rural Winfield in 1948. At one time, they had a large chicken farm operation. Opal made her career as a homemaker and farmer since 1935. Mr. McConaghy preceded her in death on July 25, 1986.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield. She was also a former 4-H leader and a former EHU member. She enjoyed reading, working outdoors, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Her daughter: Marilyn McConaghy of Oxford;
Her brother: Alfred Taylor of Winfield;
Her sister: Alta Mae Boatman of Winfield; and
Her granddaughter: Connie Lei Smith;
In addition to her parents and husband, Opal was preceded in death by her sisters, Pansy King, Bessie Likens, Nina Krepps, and Nellie Taylor.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday evening from 5 to 9. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.
A Memorial has been established in Mrs. McConaghy's name for the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
