Edward Kunkel
July 7, 1942 – February 5, 2023
Norman Edward Kunkel, 80, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, February 5, 2023 at his home.
Born July 7, 1942, in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Francis E. and Elsie Marie (King) Kunkel. He was raised in Rock and received his early education in New Salem. He then attended high school in Burden, graduating from Burden High School in 1961. Following high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country. While in the Army, he was stationed in Vietnam, Germany, and Alaska. After his honorable discharge in 1968, Ed returned home to Burden.
He was united in marriage to Wanda Sumner on January 16, 1967, at the Burden Methodist Church. The couple made their first home in Burden and Ed worked for Triplett's Garage. The family later lived in Latham, Dexter, and Cedar Vale, while Ed worked as a ranch hand for the Radcliff Ranch and the Haden Ranch. The family returned to Burden and Ed worked for Cessna and later GE at Strother Field. He spent most of his life working as a handyman, also spending time at Galaxy Tool, Valley Coop, and the One Stop in Burden.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burden and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, and making art out of horseshoes.
His family includes his wife Wanda of Burden; his son Larry Kunkel and wife, Donna of Arkansas City; his grandson Ricky Kunkel and wife, Cecilia; his granddaughter Suzanne Dieguez and husband, Carlos; his brothers, Jerry Kunkel and wife, Patty of Neosha, MO; Ken Kunkel and wife, Joyce of Hooks, TX; and his eight great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a son Terry Kunkel and a grandson Rhett Kunkel.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, February 17, 2023, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial has been established in Ed's name for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
