Obituary

NORMA K. (PARSCAL) THOMAS RILEY, 86, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Winfield.

Born January 30, 1928 in El Dorado, Kansas, she was the daughter of Howard A. and Ida M. (Sinclair) Parscal. She was raised and received her education in El Dorado graduating from El Dorado High School in 1946. She then attended Wichita Area Technical School for four years.

Norma was united in marriage to Lewis Thomas on October 4, 1947. The couple made their first home in El Dorado and moved to the New Salem area in 1949. Mr. Thomas preceded her in death on June 17, 1979. She was later married to William Riley on September 10, 1980 in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and the couple would later divorce.

Norma worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as a Food Service Supervisor for 14 years. She retired in 1993. After retirement, Norma worked in private care until 2009. She attended the El Dorado Baptist Church while in the El Dorado area, and the New Salem Presbyterian Church when her children were young. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and artwork as well as cooking.

Her family includes:

Her sons: Steve Thomas and wife, Darla of Arkansas City; Jim Thomas and wife, Ronda of New Salem;

Her daughters: Norma Jean Barkus and husband, Don of Afton, OK; Joy Vaughters and husband, Kevin of Altamont;

Her sisters: Pat Large of Independence, MO; Elsie Carson and husband, Bob of El Dorado, KS;

Her 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her first husband, Norma was preceded in death by her brothers Donald and Tony Parscal, and infant brother, Howard Parscal and her nephew, Donald Parscal.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at New Salem Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5 to 8 P.M.

A Memorial has been established in Norma's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
