Obituary

Nicholas Billy "Nick" Yianakopulos, 85, of Winfield, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Friday evening January 15, 2010 at his home.

Born November 25, 1924 in Winfield, he was the son of William B. and Vesta (Smith) Yianakopulos. He was raised and received his education on the north side of Winfield. After high school he proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, on the USS Enterprise. Nick served in the last nine major battles in the South Pacific and received nine Bronze Stars, and a Presidential Unit Citation. After returning home from the war Nick began working for the Sonner Burner Company in Winfield.

Nick was united in marriage on June 14, 1945 to Virginia Morgan in Newkirk, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Winfield. Nick worked for Boeing for over 22 years until retiring in the 1970's. He then went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an Insurance Agent. He quickly become one of the company's top salesmen, and was able to win many trips. He later began developing property in the Winfield area as a General Contractor, where he built several area homes.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, the American Legion, the USS Enterprise Association, and the Human Rights Committee at Twin Rivers, was a board member of the Eagles Nest, and was the last living board member of the Free Methodist Church in Winfield. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, gardening, and especially loved spending time with his family.

His wife: Virginia of the home;
His children: Sharon Yianakopulos of Winfield; Larry Yianakopulos and wife, Sandy of McPherson; Dr. Charlotte Yianakopulos-Veatch and husband, Rick of Colorado Springs, CO;
His sister: Patsy Sommers of Winfield;
His grandchildren: Larry Yianakopulos Jr., Jimmy Yianakopulos, Scott Yianakopulos, Kyger Veatch, and Ian Veatch; and
His 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his brothers; William, Jim, Theodore, and John, and his sisters; Mary, Georgia, and Celia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Assembly of God Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 19, 2010. The family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., that evening.

Memorials have been established in Mr. Yianakopulos' name for his Grandsons' College Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
