Obituary

Neva “Joan” Hawley, 87, of Cambridge, Kansas, passed away early Wednesday morning, November 4, 2026, at her home.

Born October 7, 1939, in Grenola, Kansas, she was the daughter of Clarence “Jack” and Isabell Sutton. She was raised in Grenola, and graduated from Grenola High School in 1957.

She was married to Carl Hawley June 7, 1958. In the next few years, they had two daughters and made their home in Cambridge.

Joan worked for Southwestern College cleaning dorms, and at Albertsons in Winfield before taking a job as a clerk at the post office in 1973. In 1980, she was promoted to postmaster of the Cambridge Post Office, where she worked until she retired in 2001.

She enjoyed having a house full of family and friends, a spirited game of cards, or a heartfelt conversation over coffee. She could often be found reading a good mystery, watching the latest Hallmark movie, or cheering on her Jayhawk basketball team. She loved supporting her grandchildren and great grandchildren in multiple activities. She was also a member of the Cambridge Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her daughter Jackie Liebau and husband, Chuck of Cambridge; granddaughter Amie Ferguson (Isaac) of Cambridge; grandson Andy Liebau (Betsy) of Wakefield; brother Earl Sutton of Arkansas City; brother Jack Sutton of Winfield; brother Boyd Sutton (Judi) of Winfield; sister Darlene Krug (Bunny) of Cambridge; and six great grandchildren: Parker and Violet Ferguson, Lyla, Lucas, Landree, and Lincoln Liebau.

Along with her parents and husband, Carl, she was preceded in death by a daughter Carla and her husband Joel Thompson, and a sister Betty Scarth and her husband Larry, sisters-in-law, Pat Sutton and Nina Sutton, in-laws, Pearl and Gladys Hawley, Ellis and Sophia Hawley, Raymond and Phyllis Hawley, and Dorothy and Dean Keplinger.

She also loved a whole host of extended family including numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends that felt like family.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 9, 2026, at Miles Funeral Service. Private interment will take place at a later date. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 PM. The family will greet visitors during this time.

Memorials have been established in Joan’s name for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Wounded Warrior Project. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
