Nadine N. Elam, 87, of Winfield, Kansas passed away Saturday evening, November 16, 2013 at William Newton Hospital.
Born April 8, 1926 in Emporia, Kansas, she was the daughter of George Franklin and Maude (Wyatt) Noyes. She was raised and received her education in Emporia, graduating from Emporia High School. She then attended Kansas State University where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Dietary Science. While attending Kansas State she met her future husband, John C. Elam Jr. She later served a residency as a Dietician in Oklahoma City.
Nadine was united in marriage to John C. Elam Jr., on August 7, 1948 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The couple lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Texarkana, Arkansas and Monroe, Louisiana, where John worked for Borden Dairy. In 1953 the couple moved to Winfield, Kansas to live on the family farm, and Nadine devoted her time to raising their family. In 1965 she began working for the Winfield School District as a Dietician. She worked for the school district four years before leaving to continue her career as a Dietician at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for over 20 years, until retiring. After retirement, she enjoyed teaching Decorative Painting Classes until 2012. Mr. Elam preceded her in death on April 16, 2013.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield, where she served on numerous committees. She was also a member of the American Dietetic Association, the Kansas Wheat Hearts and the Society of Decorative Painters. She enjoyed painting, bird watching and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Nadine would paint many projects that John had made for the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary Bazaar.

Her sons: John Charles Elam III and wife, Jean of Winfield; Eric David Elam and wife, Marcia of Scottsdale, AZ;
Her daughters: Nancy McGregor and husband, Bob of Winfield; Melody Spencer and husband, Terry of Little Elm, TX; Christine Johnson and husband, Kevin of Salina;
Her grandchildren: Jason and Justin Elam and Jill Shelton; Craig Elam and Lori Young; Ashley and Anna McGregor; Jennifer Kirby and Chad Spencer; and her 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Elam was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Liggett.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, northwest of Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday evening, November 20, 2013 from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.
Memorials have been established in Nadine's name for the First Baptist Church in Winfield, Cumbernauld Village and Harden Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
