Obituary

Minerva "Janeanne" Fry, 98, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, January 28, 2024, at her home.

Born December 5, 1925, in Fairfax, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Robert C. and Minerva Lucinda (Graham) Cardwell.  She was raised and received her education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School.  She worked for Beach Aircraft from 1945 to 1946 and then at Winfield Laundry until 1951.

Janeanne was united in marriage to Ralph Dean Fry on March 24, 1951, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield.  The couple made their first homes traveling western Kansas and Nebraska in the oil fields. Janeanne dedicated her life to being a homemaker, raising her children overseas while her husband worked for the USAID beginning in 1953.  The family lived in Tripoli, Libya for seven years, then Cairo, Egypt for four years, and Vientiane, Laos for eight years.  While stationed overseas, Janeanne enjoyed gathering other families serving overseas, for times of games and fellowship.  In 1975, Dean retired and the family returned to Winfield.  Janeanne and Dean were fortunate to vacation all over the world while serving overseas.  Mr. Fry preceded her in death on January 3, 2000.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield, the Order of the Eastern Star, Church Women United, Grace Raymond Circle, the Red Hat Hattitudes, and the Hospital Auxiliary.  She was a founding member of the Winfield Farmers' Market.  She was an avid reader, often reading a book a day in her later years, and developing a close relationship with the staff of Winfield Public Library.  She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and her daily morning Coke (never coffee).  Every month, she received two deliveries of bottled Coca Cola, delivered by the local Coca Cola Company for more than 50 years.  She also enjoyed gardening, taking bouquets of flowers to the county fair for many years.

Her family includes her children, Catherine Shiever and husband, Dennis of Winfield; Frank Fry and wife, Debbie of Winfield; Dorothy Potter and husband, Patrick of Winfield; Linda Hanshaw of Winfield; her sister Margaret Johnson of Winfield; her brother Bruce Cardwell of Sonoita, AZ; her grandchildren, Debra Koss; Evert Shiever and wife, Nara; Ruthanne Scudder; Christopher Potter and wife, Jocelyn; Sarah Houser and husband, Jeremy; and her eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Janeanne was preceded in death by a brother Robert Cardwell and a sister Sharon Frazer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, February 1, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Winfield under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.  A private family interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Janeanne's name for the Winfield Public Library and for the Eastern Star Estaral Fund.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
