During this time, he also worked at Albertson's Super Market and for Bielby Dental Lab. During his 33 years at Smith-Moon, he served two years active duty in the United States Army and four years in the reserve unit at Howard, Kansas. Following Smith-Moon, Milton worked for Wendy's, Webster Engineering, Reedy Ford, and Burger King, retiring from Burger King in 2001, but continued working part-time.

He was on the board of directors for the United Way, served on the Board of Directors at Winfield Rest Haven, and was a lifetime member of the Optimist Club. He also worked as counselor and cook at Flint Hills Christian Camp near Sedan, Kansas. Since 2000, he had been very active with his beloved Alma Mater, Oklahoma Christian University, and Alumni Association. At Homecoming 2006, he was awarded a laptop computer for his service to the Alumni Association.
Milton enjoyed being an expert seamster, sending emails, and cooking. He was working on a cook book of almost 300 recipes. He also enjoyed playing 10 point pitch with friends. He loved driving Thunderbirds, as he had 15 in his driving history.
