Mildred I. Carter, 96, formerly of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, July 22, 2018, at the Family Health Rehab in Wichita, Kansas.
Born January 9, 1922 in Tyro, Kansas, she was the daughter of James A. and Nettie "Della" (Craven) Earley. She was raised and received her education in Nowata, Oklahoma.
During World War II, Mildred moved to Topeka, Kansas, where she helped in the war efforts making radios. Following the war she married Daniel Hager. The couple made their home in Hager Hill, Kentucky. Mr. Hager preceded her in death in June of 1955. Mildred returned to Kansas, moving to Independence in 1959.
She was united in marriage to George N. Carter on October 2, 1961 in Independence, Kansas, where the couple made their first home. The couple moved to Winfield in 1962. Mildred began working in food service at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She remained there for over 10 years, retiring in 1985. After retiring the couple moved to Arkansas City. She later to Goddard, Kansas, and then Wichita, Kansas. Mr. Carter preceded her in death on June 27, 1995.
She was a member of the Church of God. In addition to caring for her pets, Mildred enjoyed cooking and writing poetry.
Her family includes her nephew Gerald Earley and wife, Myrna of Wichita; her niece Joyce Earley of Wichita; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Mildred was preceded in death by nine siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 27, 2018 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will be held at 1:30 P.M. at the Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery in Nowata, Oklahoma. A visitation will be held at the funeral home, on Thursday evening, July 26, 2018 from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 5 that evening.
A memorial has been established in Mildred's name for the Alzheimer Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
