Obituary

Mike E. Swope, 55, of Mulvane, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born July 5, 1968, in St. Joseph, Missouri, he was the son of Neil Nelson and Helen LaVonne (Williams) Swope.  He was raised and received his education in St. Joseph, graduating from Lafayette High School in 1986.  Following high school, he received a Bachelor degree from Missouri Western State University and later attended Wichita State University where he earned his Master's degree in English. While in school he worked as a cook at Rax Restaurant and a mechanic at his father's business, Star Diesel Truck Stop in Elwood, Kansas.

Mike began his career as a Graphic Designer for Koch Industries in Wichita.  He remained there until 2005 when he went to work with his brother Stan at U-Save Tire in Wichita.  Mike enjoyed working for the family business until 2017 when Stan preceded him in death.  Mike was currently working for Garda Armored Transport.  He also worked as a freelance graphic designer for the Mulvane Chamber of Commerce and wrote for the Mulvane Newspaper.  He was an accomplished author having his poetry and short stories published multiple times.

He was passionate about Taekwondo, both as a participant and a teacher.  Mike was involved in Taekwondo nearly his entire life and was the founder of the Kansas Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Association. He also enjoyed books, comics, writing, graphic design, collecting Apple electronics,  riding motorcycles, and watching movies.

His family includes his children, Kailyn Hukill and husband, Tyler of Edmond, OK; Johann Swope of Derby; Nikolas Swope of Wichita; Stephen Swope of Wichita; Abigail Graham of Oklahoma City, OK; his brother Nick Swope of St. Joseph, MO; his sister Carol Hartig and husband, Marty of St. Joseph, MO; his granddaughter Rylin Hukill of Edmond, OK; and his numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a sister Sheryl Nixon, and three brothers, Stan, Earl, and Andy Swope.

A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.  Private interment will take place at a later date.
