Obituary

Michael E. "Mike" Hanes, 71, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 10, 2020 at Medicalodge of Oxford.

Born May 12, 1949 in Council Grove, Kansas, he was the son of Millard "Hubert" and Lu (Disney) Hanes. His family moved to Winfield when Mike was very young. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1967. Following high school, Mike attended Emporia State University for a short time. He joined the United State Air Force and proudly served his country during Vietnam. Sgt. Hanes was stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base and was a small weapons instructor for a short time before serving as an illustrator, receiving an honorable discharge in 1973.

Mike was united in marriage to Cindy King in February 1971. The couple moved back to Winfield following his military discharge. Mike returned to school at Cowley County Community College and received an associate's degree. He worked at the post office and later owned and operated Island Park Radiator Shop and Collier's Tire Service.

Mike was a member of the American Legion Post #10. He enjoyed cooking for the legion, coaching Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball, fishing, and bow hunting. He helped established the Walnut Valley Bass Club.

His family includes Cindy Hanes of Winfield; his sons Bryan Hanes and wife, Lisa of Philadelphia, PA; Brady Hanes of Philadelphia, PA; his brother Richard Hanes of Eudora, KS; his sister Susan Craig of Anderson, MO; his grandson Isaac Hanes of Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a sister Janet Hanes Smyth, and a brother Sam Hanes.

The family will hold private memorial services. Cremation is under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established in Mike's name to help defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
