Merle D. Rhodes, 95, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, January 27, 2017 at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.
Born May 24, 1921 in Arkansas City, Kansas, he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Haggard) Rhodes. He attended rural Ark City schools, Oak Grove and Lone Star. Merle moved to a farm southeast of Ark City at the age of 14.
He was united in marriage to Thelma May Hostetter on February 7, 1942 in Arkansas City. The couple lived in Wichita, where Merle worked as a body and paint man. They made their home in the Winfield area and farmed south of town for several years. He worked as a Civilian at the Airbase in Strother Field. He also worked at the Hackney, Wallingford, New Salem, Kellogg, Cambridge and Burden Elevators. He began working for the Cowley County Highway Department in Burden and transferred to the Landfill when it opened. He worked as the Foreman until his retirement in 1983. Thelma preceded him in death on December 20, 1983.
Merle had a great love for operating heavy equipment and ran the road grader for the Sheridan Township for several years. He moved from his home of 48 years in New Salem into Winfield in 2002. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and most definitely loved and excelled at woodworking.

His daughter: Eva Runyan and husband, Allen of Winfield;
His granddaughter: Sheryl Metz and husband, Wade of Oxford; and
His great grandchildren: Anthony and wife, Ashley; and Bethany.
In addition to his parents and wife, Merle was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda in 1999, his sisters, Eula Atkins and Alice Cocks and his brothers, Ted Rhodes and Doren Rhodes.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in Merle's name for Harry Hynes Hospice and Oxford Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
