MELBA L. SWEETLAND, 84, of Sedelia, Missouri, formerly of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, August 12, 2008, at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Sedelia.
Born on December 10, 1923 in Wellington, Kansas, she was the daughter of Eddie and Ella (Sharpsteen) Meyer. She was raised and educated in Wellington.
Melba was united in marriage to John William Sweetland on October 27, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona. Following John's discharge from the United States Navy, the couple moved to Winfield on March 1, 1950. Melba worked for Coleman during WWII and for Binney and Smith for a few years. But she made homemaking and taking care of her family her life's occupation. Mr. Sweetland preceded her in death on August 31, 1999.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield. When her children were younger, she was active in the Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops as troop leader. She enjoyed playing Bridge and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved going to their school and sports activities.

Her daughters: Jonette Hunter and husband, R.H. of Sedalia, MO; and Jill Greeson and husband, Mike of Topeka, KS;
Her grandchildren: Brady Sweetland, Buffy Christian, Brandon Greeson and Brook Greeson;
Her great-grandchildren: Jarod Sweetland, Keaton Christian, Tate Christian, Aidin Christian and Piper Greeson; and
Her 4 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Melba was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Meyer, and a sister, Dorothy Reese.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2008, at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5 to 9. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 that evening.
