Obituary

Minnie "Maxine" Mackey, 95, formerly of Burden, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, March 17, 2011 at Winfield Rest Haven.

Born April 25, 1915 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Yoland and Lucille (Brant) Shiflet. She was raised and received her education in Cowley County attending New Salem Elementary School and Burden High School, graduating in 1933.

Maxine was united in marriage to Henry Mackey on June 09, 1935 in Udall, Kansas. The couple made their home south of Burden where they farmed their entire married life. They were able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary before Henry preceded her in death in 1995. In 1997 Maxine moved to Winfield, to live at the Cumbernauld Village.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Burden. She was an active Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and 4-H leader. She enjoyed sewing and solving crossword puzzles. She was a special grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her brother: Dean Shiflet and wife, Ruth of Perry, IA;
Her grandchildren: Chris Mackey and wife, Gaye of Atlanta; Nancy Ybarra and husband, Tony of Dallas, TX; Brent Mackey and wife Carol of Winfield; Steve Mackey and wife, Stephanie of Burden; Dana Dames and husband, Brian of St. Louis, MO; Kurt Robinson and wife, Molly of Katy, TX; Renee Phillips and husband, Sean of Dallas, TX;
Her 15 great grandchildren; and
Her many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Maxine was preceded in death by her brother Hugh Shiflet, and her sisters, Theda Tucker, and Dorothy Sweeney.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, in Burden. Interment will follow at Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, March 20, 2011. The family will greet visitors from 1:00 to 2:30 that afternoon.

Memorials have been established in Mrs. Mackey's name for the First Baptist Church in Burden. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
