Max E.
Abrams
July 5, 1929 – February 1, 2021
Max E. Abrams, 91, died February 1, 2021.
Max was born July 5, 1929 at the family farm northwest of Arkansas City. He grew up on the farm and attended Lone Star Elementary School through 8 th grade. He then graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1947. He attended one year of college at Arkansas City Junior College (now known as Cowley Community College) and then married Mary Jane Cunningham in 1948.
Max worked for three years at Cessna in Wichita as a tool and die maker and then Born Stone Company in Silverdale as a Draftsman for several years; all while operating the family farm with his wife and their four kids. Max and Mary Jane divorced in 1993.
In 1968, Max designed and built a leaf spring manufacturing plant in Chanute. In the 1970s, he started a design and manufacturing company and named it Spring Machine. He designed and manufactured "one of a kind" machinery and sold the equipment in the US and several Latin American countries over the next 40+ years.
Max married Mary Lou Matamoros in 1995 and helped raise her two children by a previous marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Helen; his siblings, Hazel, Loyd Jr and Robert; his first wife Mary Jane; and his second wife Mary Lou.
He is survived by his children, Steve E. and Susan Abrams; Connie M. and Charles E. Fox; Wayne A. and Kathy Abrams; and Joe G. Abrams. In addition, he is survived by Mary Lou's children, Lulu Williams and Joe Duarte.
Max is also survived by seven grandchildren: Tamen & John Eis; FM & Lacy Abrams; Keela & Jason Brewer; Carson & Elizabeth Abrams; Chris & Julie Abrams; Adam & Amy Abrams; and Kelly & Nick Ostrem; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Additionally, he is survived by Lulu's two children: Sofia and Isabella.
Max lived his whole life, to the very end, on the family farm on which he was born. He was proud of the fact that he lived on the farm which his great-grandfather obtained in 1871. However, he told many people he was most proud of his family: kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and generations yet to come. He thought about and wanted to leave a legacy for all of them.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Mt. Zion Community Church in the Fellowship Hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.
