Obituary

Maurice W. "Cookie" Hoover, 84, of Winfield, Kansas passed away June 10, 2013 at the Kansas Veterans Home.

Cookie was born February 10, 1929 on a farm west of Fredonia, Kansas, to George and Mary Merle (Smith) Hoover. The family moved to Winfield where he was raised and educated, graduating from Winfield High School in 1947.

Cookie enlisted in the United States Army on January 1, 1951. There he served in the 43rd Armored Infantry Battalion "Hell on Wheels", stationed in Baumholder, Germany. Through this enlistment he made life long friends and "brothers", while serving his country.

Cookie returned home to Winfield after his honorable discharge in December 1952 and began working in the oilfields before marrying Diana Beswick on December 10, 1955. They began their married life together and farmed northwest of Winfield, for 50 years, raising their family.

He enjoyed raising livestock, farming, raising alfalfa hay and attending his 6 grandsons' school and sporting activities. In addition he always looked forward to attending his annual Army buddies reunion in Louisburg, Missouri and reuniting with his 3rd platoon squadron "Charlie Company" brother, Tuff Hamlet.

His family includes:
His sons: Louis Hoover of Winfield; and Larry Hoover and wife, Renee of Winfield;
His daughter: Julie Seitz of Winfield;
His 6 grandsons: Quentin, Reece and Tucker Hoover, John Tyler and Conner Seitz and Garrett Hoover;
His sisters: Lenora Holt of Thedford, Nebraska; and Mary Sturm of Winfield;
His sister-in-law: Mary Hoover of Lavonia, Georgia; and
Several Cousins, nieces, nephews and his farm dog, "Okie".

Cookie was preceded in death by his parents, his uncle, John Hoover, his brother, Jerry D. Hoover and his wife, Diana Hoover.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery northwest of Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 6 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that afternoon.

A Memorial has been established in Cookie's name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
