Obituary

Mary Katherine Shiflet, 86, formerly of Winfield, Kansas passed away Saturday afternoon, March 6, 2010 in Springdale, Arkansas, where she made her home with her daughter since 2005.

Born January 26, 1924 near Udall, Kansas, she was the daughter of John and Cora (Pickett) Heffner. She was raised and received her education in Udall, graduating from Udall High School in 1942.

Mary was united in marriage to Hugh "Bud" Shiflet on October, 17, 1942, in Chickasha, Okalahoma. The couple lived and farmed near Burden, Kansas. In 1969 the family moved to Winfield where Mary worked for many years as a Communications Director at the Winfield State Hospital. She spent her retirement years volunteering at the Kansas Veterans' Home and at Joseph's Storehouse in Burden. Mr. Shiflet preceded her in death on July 18, 1996.

She enjoyed raising flowers, volunteering, and especially loved spending time with family.

Her sister: Ruth Shiflet and husband, Dean of Perry, IA;
Her sister-in-law: Maxine Mackey of Winfield;
Her grandchildren: Todd Leftwich and wife Shauni; Diana Ramsey; Kelly Stern and husband, Paul; Misti Goltl and husband, Scott; Beau Bailey and Wife Tina; Tisha Catlin and husband Jason; Mary Katherine "Katie" Sims-Navarre and husband, Shawn;
Her great grandchildren: Sam Leftwich; Zane Leftwich; Colby Ramsey; Ethan Bailey; Audrie Bailey; Devin Catlin; Parris Sims-Navarre; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence, Claude, and Jack Heffner, her sister, Mae Hinshaw, her grandson, Randy May, and her great grandson, Chance Ramsey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, March 12, 2010 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4:00 to 8:00. The family will greet visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 that evening.

Memorials have been established in Mary's name for the Kansas Veterans' Home and for Joseph's Storehouse. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
