Mary Laverne Frazier Jennings-Gross, 74, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023, at William Newton Hospital.
Born January 1, 1949, in Langston, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Aaron L. and Abbie M. (Frazier) Gunter. She received her education in Wichita, graduating from East High School in 1967. As a young woman, Mary was a model for Macy's and won first place in a dance program.
She was married twice, once to Rodney Jennings for over 20 years, and then to Harold Gross for 20 years, and divorced. She worked at the Rodeo Meat Packing Plant for a short time. Mary obtained her CNA certificate and went to work for the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 14 years and later Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
She was a member of St. James Church of God In Christ in Arkansas City. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning, shopping, playing games, and watching cartoons. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and teaching them to dance.
Her family includes her mother Abbie Gunter of Wichita; her children, Valarie Madondo and husband, Simon of Winfield; Rosalyn Driver of Winfield; Kim Frazier of Arkansas City; Maria Jennings of Winfield; Michael D'Angelo Vesey of Syracuse, NY; Rodney Jennings, Jr. and wife, Amy of Winfield; her siblings, Aaron "Buddy" Gunter of Colorado; Nathan Gunter of Wichita; David Gunter of Wichita; Marvin Gunter of Wichita; Rosie Frazier of Seattle, WA; Idella Wilson of Wichita; Rebecca Gunter of Tulsa, OK; Denise McDaniels of Wichita; Louise Gunter of Wichita; 12 grandchildren, Shinyah, Jayda, and Starnisha Griffin, Samson Madondo, Genesis Godbolt, Zion Driver, Nicholas and Timothy Patton, Nathan Jennings, Siearra Andrews, Xavier Hardy, and Demetrius Johnson; and 11 great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Aaron Gunter, a niece Laquetta Gunter, a sister Debbie Gunter, and a granddaughter Jasmine Vesey.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at the Church of God in Christ in Arkansas City, Kansas. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas. A visitation is scheduled on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from 4 to 8 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet visitors that evening.
A memorial has been established in Mary's name for the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
