MARY HELEN (JOHNSON) COOK, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 13, 2014 at William Newton Hospital.
Mary began her journey in life on December 24, 1932 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She grew up in the loving home of Henry and Agnes Johnson along with a sister, Patricia and a brother, Leon. Mary attended Ponca City schools, participating in choir and playing piano as a member of a salon orchestra. She graduated with the class of 1951.
Mary's passion was music and she especially loved her piano students. She directed chancel choirs, started a childrens' choir, and wrote and performed seasonal music performances while in Harper, Kansas. Mary was also instrumental in bringing Food for Kids to the Winfield school district. She loved her family which included daughters Terry and Tammy Jo and their husbands, her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Terry Couchman and husband Ross of Grayslake, IL, and their daughter Kelly Couchman, Evansville, IN; daughter Tammy Jo Smith and husband Doug of Burden, Kansas and their children Robyn Smith and Layne Smith of Winfield; and Robyn's children Tatum and Devin; Gloria and Patrick Haines and their daughter Esther whom she loved like her own.
She is also survived by her loving sister Patricia and husband Larrie of Udall, their son Craig Brewer and wife Diana and their sons Daniel and Joe Brewer; and a brother, Leon of Winfield.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Gentiva Hospice, the Cowley County Humane Society, Safe Homes Outreach or Grace United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
