Obituary

Mary Alice Ankrom, 97, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, October 26, 2026, at Winfield Senior Living.

Born January 17, 1929, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, she was the daughter of Fred and Lydia (Webb) Jordan. She was raised and received her early education in Missouri before moving with her family to the Cambridge, Kansas area. She attended and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1947, becoming the first in her family to graduate. She then went to work as a waitress at a cafe in Winfield and later worked at Sheneman Meat Market.

She was united in marriage to Ray Eugene Ankrom on March 24, 1951, in Wichita. The couple made their first home in Winfield before moving to the Burden Ranch. Later they moved to her family’s farm west of Burden in 1955. In 1967, the couple built a home on 80 acres four miles west of Burden. In 1970, they purchased their own grocery store in Burden named Ankrom’s Market. Together, they owned and operated the business until she retired in 1987 and they sold the market. Ray preceded her in death on December 22, 2002.

She attended Burden United Methodist Church. She enjoyed mowing her yard, gardening, taking care of her family, and attending all of her grandchildren’s events. She also enjoyed making a big Sunday dinner for her entire family.

She is survived by her children, Hal Ankrom of Winfield; Sheila Otto and husband, Steve of House Springs, MO; Renee Womacks of Peck; Cindy Mays and husband, John of Winfield; her grandchildren, Erik Ankrom (Mallory) of Olathe; Kaylie Dinkins (Dusty) of Annapolis, MO; Bree Wilson (Jordan) of Hillsboro, MO; Megan Otto of Valley Park, MO; Nicole Weimer (Matt) of Wichita; Kyle Womacks (Chandler) of Wichita; Logan Mays (Katie) of Winfield; Jordan Mays (Courtney) of Winfield; and her 14 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ray, Mary was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00, Friday, October 30, 2026, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Burden Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 PM. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 7 that evening.
