MARVIN JOSEPH HANCOCK, Ph.D., passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at his home in Grover Beach, California.
He was born the second son of Harold H. and Marjorie L. (Kempton) Hancock in October 1933, south of Cambridge, Kansas. He went to a one-room school, then transferred to Cambridge High School, where he played basketball.
Marvin graduated in 1951 and went to Pittsburg State College to play basketball. He was drafted and sent to Korea. He married Shirley Ann Stanton on September 4, 1959. He graduated with a BA in History from Tulsa University in 1960, and in 1963 with a MA. He taught in the Tulsa School System and became Supervisor of Social Sciences in 1966 in Topeka, Kansas. Marvin earned his Doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1972.
He worked on the Economic Development and Airport Administration for 15 years. He was a member of the San Luis Obispo Grand Jury and Rotary.
Marvin is survived by:
His wife: Shirley Hancock;
His sister: Marilyn J. Streater;
His sons: Michael and Richard Hancock; and
His grandchildren: Joel, GayLynn, Nicholas and Allison.
In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his brother, Richard.
Graveside memorial services and military honors will be conducted on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at the South Prairie Cemetery in Cambridge, Kansas. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of the local arrangements.
A memorial has been established in Marvin's name for Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, 277 South St., Ste. R, San Luis Obispo, California, 93401.
