Marvin W. Hafenstein, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 5, 2015 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.
Born February 26, 1934 in Eskridge, Kansas, he was the son of Henry "Hank" John Richard and Mildred Louise (Kinzy) Hafenstein. He was raised and received his education in Eskridge graduating from Eskridge High School in 1952.
In 1953 he joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country as a radio operator in the Korean War. In 1959 he was transferred to San Diego, California and joined the 564th Strategic Missile Squadron where he began working on the ATLAS Missile Project. In 1963 he was honorably discharged from the Air Force and returned to Kansas.
Marvin was united in marriage to JoAnn Tatum on June 10, 1956 in Burden, Kansas. After his military service Marvin attended Pittsburg State University and received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation he began working as a project engineer. His career took the family to several locations including: Kansas City, MO; Joplin, MO; Bentonville, AR; and Laurel, MS. In 1991 Marvin and JoAnn returned to Burden, KS and he began working as a teacher and bus driver for the Burden High School. He later joined the Southwestern College Faculty where he developed the Professional Studies Program. His wife JoAnn preceded him in death on June 16, 2009.
Marvin was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church where he was actively involved. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and baseball. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

His sons: Dewayne Hafenstein and wife, Mari of McKinney, TX; Bruce Hafenstein and wife, Patty of Burden, KS;
His daughter: Susan Hafenstein of Hershey, PA;
His grandchildren: Brianna, Nathan, Daniel, Kellen, Amber, Ashley and Alexis;
His great grandchildren: Olivia, Christopher, Alex, and Treighton; and
Other extended family members including nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Marvin was preceded in death by his brother Neil Hafenstein.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the Burden United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Grand Prairie Cemetery north east of Burden. A visitation will be held at Miles Funeral Service on Thursday evening from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors during this time.
A Memorial has been established in Marvin's name for the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
