Obituary

MARTHA JANE WERNTZ, 68, of Winfield, passed away Friday afternoon, July 30, 2010 at her home.

Born December 31, 1941 in Lebo, Kansas, she was the daughter of Lloyd William and Geneva Pearl (Venard) Romary. She was raised and received her education in Lebo, graduating Lebo High School in 1959.

Martha was married to Charles Hammond on February 7, 1960. To this union, 5 children were born. The couple divorced in 1981. She was united in marriage to William Werntz on June 3, 1984 in Baldwin, Kansas. The couple lived in Burlington, Kansas before moving to Winfield in October of 1989.

Mrs. Werntz worked as a surgical technician and a nurse's aide for Coffey County Hospital, and later worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in Winfield where she was a MRT1. While working at the State Hospital, she attended Cowley County Community College, where she received her CMA Certificate. She retired from the State Hospital in 1997 due to disability.

Martha loved making clothes and quilts for her grandchildren. She enjoyed babysitting and just being with her family. She loved to watch Survivor, Bachelor and games shows. She especially enjoyed her arts and crafts and doing her word searches with her morning coffee.

Her sons: Justin C. and wife, Shelley Hammond of Emporia;
Her daughters: Christina M. Brumley of Arkansas City; Kathleen A. Rhodes and husband, Jimmy of Winfield; and Jennifer L. Stellwagon and husband, Joe of Lawrence;
Her brothers: Donald Romary of Ft. Worth; and Tom Romary of Ottawa;
Her sister: Mildred Ozaki of Topeka;
Her grandchildren: Christopher Brumley, Casey Brumley, Kiefer Stellwagon, Reese Stellwagon, Carli Stellwagon, Rylie Stellwagon, Anyssa Hammond, and Daniel Whitaker;
Her great grandchild: Jaimen Brumley;
Several nieces and nephews; and
Her mother-in-law and father-in-law: Nick and Marge Kring of Baldwin City.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her infant son, Donald Dean Hammond, her brothers, Charles, Bill and Ted, and her sisters, Margie Sullivan, Mary Page, and Mable Romary.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

Memorials have been established in Martha's name for the Cowley County Humane Society and for the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
