Obituary

MARILYN C. (SWAIM) CROWLEY, 78, of Winfield, Kansas, crossed into the arms of her Savior on June 25, 2014.

She was born to Wyatt and Mary Alice (Miller) Swaim in Geuda Springs, Kansas on September 29, 1935. Marilyn graduated from William Newton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Winfield in 1956, and became the bride of B. Dale Crowley on June 7, 1958 making their home in Winfield.

Marilyn worked as a medical/surgical nurse and in 1971 helped develop a formal Intensive Care Unit at Winfield Hospital. Known as the 'Grandmother' of Kansas EMS, she was the program developer, instructor and coordinator for the first paramedic class in Cowley County at Southwestern College in Winfield, and later developed the standard curriculum for the State of Kansas Emergency Mobile Intensive Care Technician (EMICT) course.

She soon became known as the Instructors - Instructor for various programs in the State, and was a frequent lecturer on Electro-cardiology, Pharmacology, and Trauma Care. Marilyn was employed by the Wichita Fire Department as the first Chief Medical Training Officer all the while continuing to refine the art of delivering pre-hospital medical and trauma care, and developing the Rural Kansas Emergency Nursing Programs throughout the State.

Marilyn is survived by her husband: Dale of 56 years;
Her daughter: Debra (Peter) Schrag of Arkansas City;
Her grandchildren: Mallory Vickery (Darrin Capps) Wichita, KS; Cameron (Kali) Vickery of Arkansas City; Emma (Brandon) Green of Kaneohe MCS Hawaii; Kirsten (Roberto) dos Santos of Arkansas City; Abigail (Jamison) Jacobs of Belmont, Mass; and Shane W. Schrag of Arkansas City;
Her 8 beautiful great-grandchildren: Katelynn, Mackenzie, Camden, Diego, Gabriel, Kennady, Liberty, Lincoln; and
Several nieces and nephews.
Additionally, Marilyn is survived by the hundreds of EMT's and Paramedic's that have dedicated their lives to fulfilling Marilyn's dream of providing quality care for the sick and injured.
Marilyn was greeted in Heaven by her parents and brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 30, 2014 at First Church of the Nazarene in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Geuda Springs Cemetery in Geuda Springs, Kansas. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M., Sunday, June 29, 2014. The family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M., that afternoon.

Memorials have been established in Marilyn's name for the Slate Valley Baptist Church and Southwestern College Theater Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
