Obituary

Margery Lee Unbehauen, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 23, 2023, at her home.

Born August 25, 1932, in Humboldt, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Louis and Loella (Wilkinson) Hoy. She was raised and received her education in Humboldt where she graduated high school.

After graduation she moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where she met J.D. Unbehauen whom she married on October 30, 1955 at the Medford United Methodist Church in Medford, Oklahoma. The couple made their home and raised their family in Medford. Margery was a dedicated mother, wife, and farmer, working the land with J.D. until his death in 2003. Margery remained on the farm until 2012, when she moved to Winfield.

She was very active both on the farm and supporting the kids with school activities. She was always busy with crafting, especially knitting, and sewing. Over the years she made hundreds of afghans, and quilts, gifting them to family, friends, churches, and charities. She finished her last quilt in September of 2023.

Her family includes her son Gary Unbehauen and wife, Julie of Goltry, OK; her daughter Brenda Defore and husband, Dan of Winfield; her grandchildren, Dan A. Defore and wife, Melesa of Dexter; Darla Merutka and husband, Mark of Lewisville, TX; Dina Updike and husband, Todd of Broken Arrow, OK; Morgin Grippando and husband, Anthony of Cherokee, OK; Dee Unbehauen and Ladonna Durkee of Kaw City, OK; Shawna Smith of Tulsa, OK; Ryan Harrington of Dallas Texas; her great grandchildren, Amanda Janzen and husband, Ryan; Amber Taylor and husband, Paul; Alexa Parks and husband, Jared; Joey Defore; Conner Merutka and wife, Christina; Gage Merutka and Devon Fisk-Aguilar; Dallen Merutka and wife, Tyler; Cash Merutka and wife, Michaela; Tanner Updike and wife, Becca; Callie Huckabay and husband, Brady; Vivian Grippando; Bicana Grippando; Hallie Durkee; Chloe Durkee; Lydia Smith; Issac Hammond; Brecken Harrington; Caden Harrington; her great-great grandchildren, Nora Janzen, Sage Janzen, Juniper Taylor, Maple Taylor, Lincoln Parks, Lawton Parks, Kira Merutka, Easton Updike, Myles Updike; her sister-in-law Freda Kretchmar; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Margery was preceded in death by her brothers, Jim Hoy and Bob Hoy.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Medford United Methodist Church in Medford, Oklahoma, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas.  Interment will follow at Rosemound Cemetery in Medford.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials in Margery's name for the Winfield Food Pantry or the Medford United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
