Margaret Smith, 68, formerly of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 18, 2023, at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Born March 18, 1955, in Winfield, she was the daughter of  Richard P. and Veda Ovella (Hawkins) Beggs.  She was raised and received her education in Oxford, graduating from Oxford High School in 1973.

She married Brad Smith in 1975.  The couple made their home in Winfield.  To this union, a daughter was born.  The couple later divorced.  Margaret worked for a time as a Respiratory Tech at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.  She later started her career as an Optometry Tech for Dr. Dan Freeman at Freeman Eyecare.  She continued her career in Optometry working for Walmart, until retiring in 2015.  She also worked as a waitress at Winfield Country Club for over ten years.  In 2015, she moved to Grenola, Kansas, to be with her daughter's family.

She was a member of the Grenola Christian Church.  She enjoyed doing sketch art and painting.  She dedicated her time to her grandchildren, whom she loved.

Her family includes her daughter Amity Kessinger and husband, Joshua of Grenola; her sister Marcella Schultz and husband, Fred of Hutchinson; her grandchildren, Noah Kessinger and wife, Lidia; Jacob Kessinger; Isaac Kessinger; Micah Rose Kessinger; a great granddaughter Sofia Kessinger; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her brother Fred Beggs.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.  Interment will follow at the Oxford Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Margaret's name for the Grenola Christian Church and the Cowley County Humane Society.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
