Obituary

Margaret Jane "Janie" Brooks, 85, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, July 18, 2022, at William Newton Hospital.

Born October 6, 1936, in Vega, Texas, she was the daughter of Charles Elwood and Sarah Fern (Hankins) Steward. She was raised and received her early education in Texas before moving with her family to Dexter, Kansas. She finished her education in Dexter, graduating from Dexter High School in 1957.

Janie was united in marriage to Virgil "Chuck" Brooks on August 26, 1955, in Newkirk, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Winfield. Janie began her career at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. While working full-time at the state hospital, she returned to school at Southwestern College, where she earned her Master's Degree in Business. Janie remained at the state hospital for over 40 years until its closing in 1998. She then went to work for the Salvation Army for ten years, before opening the Winfield Thrift Store. Mr. Brooks preceded her in death on March 11, 1995.

Janie was a member of Kiwanis and several bowling leagues. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing softball and basketball. Recently, she enjoyed bowling, playing Pitch, and watching tennis.

Her family includes her sons, Virgil "Duke" Brooks and wife Cindy Rains of Winfield; Michael "Alan" Brooks of Winfield; her brother Charles L. Steward of Winfield; her sisters, Evelyn Linscott of Apache Junction, AZ; Dorothy I. Rush of Oxford; Charlotte Hendrick and husband, John of Wichita; and her grandchildren, Lee Brooks, Tasha Brooks, Rachel Brooks, Lance Brooks, Ashley Brooks, John Jordan and wife, Danielle Fulheart, and Robert Jordan; and numerous great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Janie was preceded in death by a sister Mildred Andrews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 22, 2022, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4 to 8 P.M.

A memorial has been established in Janie's name for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
