Obituary

Margaret E. "Mickey" Billingslea, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 28, 2018 at Cumbernauld Village.

Born July 10, 1926 in East Orange, New Jersey she was youngest of three children born to George and Josephine (Dallinger) Janssen. She was raised and received her education in East Orange and went on to attend Marietta College in Ohio. While there, she met Donald E. Campbell and the couple was married December 18, 1945. They had two daughters and divorced many years later. Mickey attended and graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield. She first taught first through twelfth grade at Maple Grove School in rural Winfield in 1957 and later fourth, fifth and sixth grades at Irving and Whittier.

She was united in marriage to Ellis D. Billingslea on December 2, 1966. The couple made their home in Winfield where Ellis owned and operated Mr. B's fabric store and Mickey helped with the daily operations of the business. Ellis preceded her in death on April 5, 2007.

Mickey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield, the Soroptimists, Red Hat Ladies, Pink Ladies, the Eve Club and was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Queen City Chapter 138. She was ornery and adventurous. Between her junior and senior year, she and several other girls biked and hiked across the states. She enjoyed counted cross stitch and being a "yarner" as well as collecting degrazia figurines. She loved to travel. After retirement, she and Ellis spent their winters in Tucson until their health would not longer allow it. She was blessed to go on many trips with her nephew, including Vermont, Florida and France. She loved to spend time with her family. They would enjoy taking the family to the lake and boating and later would hold Sunday gatherings at their house where the family would swim and eat. She also enjoyed being outside picking up leaves and tending flower gardens.

Her family includes her daughters, Carole (Kenny) Day of Winfield and Donna Jo (Jack) Blatchford of Arkansas City; step-daughter Gwen DuVal of Dallas, TX; eight grandchildren, Traci (Kenny) McNutt, Ryan Day, Eric (Gwin) Blatchford, Kimberly (John) Sanderson, Jeff (Jennifer) Blatchford, Mike (Jen) Blatchford, Matt (Kendra) Billingslea and Jenny Billingslea; 20 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; her favorite nephew, Peter (Kay) Janssen of Wichita; and other nieces and a nephew.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mickey was preceded in death by her brother Richard Janssen and sister Edith Tebow and her step-son Ellis Earl Billingslea.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Private inurnment will take place at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established in Mickey's name for the American Cancer Society in honor of family members who have battled the disease. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
