M. Martha
Spencer
March 16, 1924 – January 23, 2021
Mary "Martha" (King) Spencer, 96, of Winfield, passed away January 23, 2021.
Martha was born March 16, 1924 on the family farm north of Winfield to Thomas "Ervin" and Angeline "Angie" Roth (Knox) King. She was raised and received her education in the Winfield-Floral area.
Martha married Meryl Dean Spencer on May 19, 1940. She and her sister Inez had a double wedding at Grandview Church.
Meryl and Martha traveled for years while Meryl worked in the oil fields. They established a permanent home in Winfield, and Martha was a homemaker until she and Meryl bought and ran Vet's Cab Co. in the 1960s. She later worked in the office of the local TG&Y store for over 20 years before going to work for Trees Oil Co.
Martha was a treasured volunteer at the local American Legion Post 10. She believed it was the best way she could contribute having had four brothers serve in the military. The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Kansas, voted her "Woman of the Year" for 1995-1996.
Involved in the Grandview Church throughout her lifetime, she was the church's longest living member.
In addition to her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Vernon H. Terrell and Larry A. Nelson, and a grandson Gregory J. Spencer. She was also preceded in death by four brothers: Roy M. King; Raymond "Scotty" King; John "Robert" King; and Ralph W. King as well as four sisters: Esther (King) Friend; Edith (King) Wells; Inez (King) Foster; and Thelma (King) Brown.
Her family includes children: Gary D. Spencer (Sharon) Udall; Elaine (Spencer) Nelson; Shiela (Spencer) Terrell; Ron G. Spencer (Becky); and Jim L. Spencer (Sharon) all of Winfield; 15 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Martha lived her last few years at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield and has been laid to rest at Highland Cemetery next to her beloved husband Meryl.
A memorial has been established in Martha's name for Grandview United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made to the church or through the funeral home.
