Obituary

Lois D. Henderson of Winfield, Kansas took the hand of Jesus on October 7, 2023, at her home in the presence of her family.

Lois was born on July 1, 1938 in Rock, Kansas to James and Goldie (Huff) McKeever. She received her primary education in Rock until 8th grade.  At that time, she joined the workforce to help support her family.

In March 1954 Lois married Wesley Weathers and had three children: Debi Piatt, Gary Weathers, and Tammy Askins. The couple later divorced. On July 31, 1968, she was united in marriage to Sonny Henderson, in which two children were born: Kim Dutton and Shane Henderson.

Throughout Lois' life she was known for her kindness, work ethic and delicious cooking.  This combination of qualities equipped her well for her work. She began her career at an early age at the Ranch Lunch Café, and later McGill's Café. She spent a couple of years employed at Binney & Smith. Lois then went on to own and operate the Cozy Café, a 20-seat restaurant on 8th street in Winfield.  It was open for breakfast and lunch, and rarely was there an open seat.  Her next endeavor came in the late '80's when she opened the Country Barn Café, located inside of the Cowley County Sports Arena, which she and Sonny built.  The Cowley County Sports Arena was an indoor rodeo arena, where they produced many rodeo events.  Lois competed in barrel racing and worked behind the scenes as a secretary for many youth and open rodeos hosted at the arena. She worked alongside Sonny operating both Wagon Wheel Rodeo Company and Ranger Tree Service. They renovated the Saint James Hotel in downtown Winfield, along with other buildings and properties in the area. In her later years she continued her work in food service at William Newton Hospital. In 1999 Lois earned her GED from Cowley College.  She walked across the stage to receive her diploma with her children and grandchildren proudly cheering her on.

For those blessed to know Lois they knew a soft spoken, tough, hardworking, honest, loving and kind woman. Any of these qualities found in her children are fully credited to her. She maintained her character throughout a long, hard fought battle with lung disease. Her family was gifted to watch her relationship with God develop, blessing them with the peace of her presence in Heaven.

Lois is survived by her children Debi Piatt and partner Scott Mangrum, Tammy Askins and husband Todd, Kim Dutton and husband Brian, Shane Henderson and wife Missi, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents James and Goldie McKeever, the fathers of her children Wes Weathers and Sonny Henderson, her four sisters Dorothy, Betty, Ann and Helen, an infant sister, her son Gary Weathers and grandson Max Henderson.

Visitation with the family is Wednesday, October 11th from 5-7pm. Lois' celebration of life will be Thursday October 12th at 2pm. Both events are held at Miles Funeral Service, 4001 E. 9th Avenue, Winfield, Kansas.
