Obituary

Linus Joseph Brungardt, 98, died on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, Kansas.

Linus was born October 9, 1924, on the family farm near Walker, Kansas, to Joseph and Agnes (Dinkel) Brungardt. Linus was the eighth child in the family of seven boys and four girls. He attended St. Ann Grade School in Walker. After 8th grade he attended high school at Brunerdale Minor Seminary in Canton, Ohio. He continued his education at St. Charles Seminary in Ohio and St. Joseph College in Indiana. He relished his time with his religious brothers in the seminary, the educational opportunities, and his special bond with the Garden Gang. God's call took him in another direction, and he joined the U.S. Army and served in post-war Germany. The GI bill gave him the opportunity to earn a master's degree in history at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He moved to Wichita and began his career as a materials manager in the aircraft industry. He married Angela G. Stafford on July 28, 1952, at St. Anthony's Church, Wichita. Their five children were born in Wichita. They moved their family to Winfield in 1966 when Linus accepted the position as Inventory Manager at General Electric Service Shop, Strother Field. He retired from GE in 1987 and enjoyed his retirement years with volunteer work, travel, study, and following a variety of sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and football teams from University of Michigan and Notre Dame.

Linus was a devoted husband and father. He and Angela enjoyed belonging to bridge and pinochle clubs, going to Wichita State and Southwestern College basketball games, and attending the Horsefeathers and Applesauce dinner productions for many seasons. He relished the simple pleasures of life with his children –walks, bowling, churning ice cream, and sports. He strived to pass on his faith, work ethic, and generosity. He worked hard to ensure that his children would each have the opportunity for a college education. Over the years he and Angela were adopted grandparents to many local youngsters.

Linus lived the stewardship way of life of sharing his time, talent, and treasure long before the words were used in the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. He served his Catholic Community in many capacities – lector, catechist, sacristan, altar server trainer, Eucharistic minister to the homebound, school tutor, with the Knights of Columbus, Harvest House, and various Parish committees. He was involved in the civic community with Meals on Wheels, Lions' Club, Elks Club, Twin Rivers' Board, and Winfield Day Care Board.

Linus is survived by his children, Sister Charlotte Brungardt, Winfield, KS; Catherine and Gary Kostlan, Saline, MI; Clement and Phyllis Brungardt, Oxford, PA; Christopher and Christine Brungardt, Reading, MA; Charles Brungardt, Iowa City, IA and four grandchildren, Sarah Brungardt, Ray Kostlan, Ben Brungardt, and Beth Brungardt. Linus was preceded in death by his wife Angela in 2010, his parents, his brothers Gregory, Dominic, Herman, Joseph, Valerian, Edwin and his sisters Amelia, Henrietta, Eleanor, and infant sister Henrietta.

The Rosary will be recited on Sunday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church followed by the interment at St Mary Cemetery in Winfield.
