Obituary

LeVergne S. "Vern" Snell, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, January 24, 2023, at Cumbernauld Village.

Born September 10, 1930, in Winfield he was the son of Seymour LeVergne and Janie Belle (Bowlby) Snell. He was raised and received his education in Udall, graduating from Udall High School in 1948. He then attended Cowley County Community College before serving in the United States Army. While stationed in Alaska, Vern enjoyed being on the army baseball team. He also received the expert level as a sharpshooter while in the service. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to the family farm near Wilmot.

He was united in marriage to Betty Sledge on August 20, 1955, at the First Christian Church in Winfield. The couple made their first home in Winfield and Vern worked for Pomona Tile Company. When American Olean acquired Pomona Tile, Vern was transferred to Pennsylvania. The family returned to Winfield when Vern accepted a position with USD 465 as Superintendent of Building and Grounds. He remained with the school district for over 25 years, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and Winfield Bass Club. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, hunting, gardening, and playing baseball and basketball. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities.

His family includes his wife Betty Snell of Winfield; his daughter Vicki Evans and husband, Bryce of Winfield; his son Steven Snell and wife, Debi of Winfield; his brother Marvin Snell and wife, Janey of Parkerfield; his grandchildren, Travis Evans and wife, Kelly; Shane Snell and Audrey; Christy Reams and husband, Calvin; Lindsey Rice and husband, Josh; Stephanye Edwards and husband, Glen; and his great grandchildren, Maggie Snell, Jackson Evans, Addison Reams, Walker Evans, Marion Edwards, Brody Reams, and Cason Reams.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, January 30, 2023, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.

A memorial has been established in Vern's name for the Winfield Food Pantry. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
