LEONARD C. "PETE" KUKUK, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, August 21, 2013 at the Kansas Veterans Home.
Born January 30, 1923 in Arkansas City, he was the son of Karl and Mae (Curfman) Kukuk. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School. He joined the United States Army and served during WWII. He sat in the 5th Infantry Division and was a first scout in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. After the war Pete worked on a ranch in Colorado and a farm in Illinois as a young man.
He was united in marriage to Joan "Judy" Vaughn on March 7, 1948 in Winfield. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Winfield in 1952 where he farmed and raised sheep until his retirement in 2001. Judy preceded him in death on December 4, 2009.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield. He served as a trustee and usher. He also served on the Board of the Hackney Coop and the Valley Coop for 29 years. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

His grandchildren: Matthew Hopper and wife, Amanda of Winfield; Michelle McGinnis and husband, Ash of Winfield; Julie Young and husband, Mike of Holt, MI; Jessica Leonard and husband, Justin of Chicago, IL;
His great grandchildren: Alicyn, Emercyn and A.J. McGinnis, Henry, Eleanor and Abigail Young, and Joseph, Aida and Samuel Leonard; and
His step grandchildren: Logan, Mason and Regan.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Pete was preceded in death by his sister, Vada Lloyd and his brother, Harold Kukuk.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday afternoon, August 24, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Tannehill Cemetery. Friends may sign a register book on Friday evening, August 23 from 4 to 7 P.M.
A Memorial has been established in Pete's name for the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
