Leoma Clarice Gay went to be with the Lord and family on November 15, 2018. Leoma was a longtime resident of Winfield, Kansas where she raised her family and enjoyed numerous friendships. Leoma blessed this earth for 99 years and will be truly missed.
Leoma Clarice Gay was born Leoma Yount September 9, 1919 in Eldorado, Kansas to Martha and William Yount. Shortly after birth her family moved to Winfield, Kansas. Leoma was from a large family, she was one of nine children. Some of her favorite childhood activities were playing with her brothers and sisters and pets. She also had a healthy affinity for penny candy a relationship that followed her throughout her life.
Leoma married Harold Gay August 4, 1937. When Harold asked for permission to marry Leoma her mother replied "Harold she can't even sew on a button". Harold answered "that is okay we will use bachelor buttons". The bachelor buttons must have worked, they had a wonderful marriage that lasted 58 years. She of course did eventually learn to sew. Harold and Leoma were blessed with two children Marilyn and William. Marilyn went on to be a Registered Nurse and William became a rider with the Lippanzers. Her family continued to grow and now includes three grandchildren Greg, Gretchen and Joshua, four great grandchildren Brandon, Colby, Monica and Jackson and three great-great grandchildren.
Later in life Leoma became Granny Gay. Granny truly enjoyed sneaking her grandchildren away from their parents to the local grocery store in Winfield and treating them to some candy, they were always lovely walks in which a kid could always be a kid and their Granny would play right along with them. These walks would turn into quite the tradition and were always looked upon with great anticipation.
Leoma spent many years serving her community. She was a volunteer Pink Lady at the local hospital and twenty one years with Meals on Wheels. Her generosity and love of community service was passed down to her children and grandchildren. Leoma was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Winfield.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Saturday, November 24th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in Leoma's name for First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
