Lee F. Baxter, 93, passed away surrounded by family at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, on Friday, May 27, 2011.
Lee was born July 31, 1917 at the family home near Rock, KS to Alva and Leota Curfman Baxter. As a young boy, Lee's family moved to New Salem and later to the Grandview area where he attended school. As a young man he worked on the family farm, as well as on a neighbor's farm, where he would meet his future bride Berniece.
Lee married Berniece David on December 31, 1938. Together they made their home in Winfield and celebrated 66 years together until her passing on January 8, 2005. Lee joined the US Army and served in Korea. After the Army, Lee worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1980. Lee was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church.
Lee enjoyed his family to the fullest. Often he could be seen pushing his grandchildren as toddlers through the yard in a wheelbarrow, playing baseball, or fishing at Island Park. Later, he colored and played with his great grandchildren for hours at a time. He was young at heart and never had a complaint for anyone.
