Obituary

Layne Kevin Kenzy, 76, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at his home.

Born September 22, 1947, in Winner, South Dakota, he was the son of Darl and Lois (Ellwanger) Kenzy.  He was raised and received his education in South Dakota, graduating from Gregory High School in 1965.  He then began attending Southern State Teacher's College in Springfield, South Dakota where he was studying to become a Diesel Mechanic.  In 1968, Layne was in a vehicle accident that left him paralyzed.  After the accident, he made the decision to attend Oklahoma Tech in Okmulgee, Oklahoma and study watch repair.  Upon his graduation from Oklahoma Tech in 1973, he started his career at Archer's Jewelry in Winfield, Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Linda Moon on April 14, 1990 at Maple City Community Church. The couple made their home in Winfield.  In the early 1990's,  they began running their own business, Chip N Away At Time, where Layne continued doing watch repair.  Several years later, he also began working on the electrical parts for GP Traps, a trapshooting company.  He continued both ventures, until retiring in January of 2024.

He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and Sons of the American Legion.  He enjoyed wood turning, making jewelry, carving, fishing, playing cards, and riding motorcycles.

His family includes his wife Linda Kenzy of Winfield; his daughters, Elizabeth (Rob) O'Bryan of Burden; Virginia Smith (Gordon Kaiser) of Winfield; Kim (Wayne) Fleetwood of Arkansas City; Misty Weaver of Beloit; his sister Karol Kenzy (Joe Knab) of Winfield; and his nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Layne was preceded in death by his son Corbin Thompson and two sons-in-law Dave Smith, and Craig Peri.

Funeral services will be held at  2:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Miles Funeral Service.  Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.  A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 P.M.  The family will greet friends during this time.

A memorial has been established in Layne's name for the Iona Community Center in South Dakota.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
