Obituary

LAWRENCE "BUTCH" KELLY, 63, of Winfield, Kansas, died Saturday morning, April 2, 2011 at his home.

Butch was born January 22, 1948 in Winfield, Kansas to Lawrence and Madlyne (Collier) Kelly. He attended Winfield Schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1966. In 1965, he joined the United States Navy and was educated at the Great Lakes Medical School. He served in Vietnam as a medic aboard the USS Ashtabula. He continued to serve until his honorable discharge in 1972.

On February 13, 1971, Butch was united in marriage to Emma Underwood in Grenola, Kansas. The couple made their home in Winfield.

Butch worked on a charter fishing boat in Key West, Florida, a commercial shrimping boat in Kodiak, Alaska, as a production molder at Binney and Smith and at Morton Buildings as a foreman from 1975 until his retirement in 2007.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #3544 and the American Legion Post #10. He was also a member of the American Legion Riders Post #10 and the Patriot Guard. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, riding his motorcycle, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends.

Butch's family includes:
His wife: Emma Kelly of the home;
His son: Anthony of Ponca City, Oklahoma;
His daughter: Rebecca and fiance, Chris of Winfield; and
His grandchildren: Derieck, Tiffany, Keiran, and Jaydon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brothers, Earl Widener and Buddy Kelly, and his sister, Rogene Turner.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment and military committal honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening, April 4, from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Miles Funeral Service to help defray funeral expenses.
