LAWRENCE NICK "DUTCH" HENERY, 97, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, died February 27, 2011 at Sedan, Kansas.

He was born November 15, 1913 in Caldo County, Cyril, Oklahoma. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth "Schmitt" Henery. Dutch attended Cyril schools. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Day of Dexter, Kansas on April 8, 1941.

Dutch started his career with his uncle, Jack Henery, as a heavy equipment operator on road construction until 1942. He served his country in the United States Army from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He then returned to road construction until 1948 when he was employed as a heavy shovel operator at Peabody Coal Mine at Montrose, Missouri for thirty plus years. Dutch was the last living original big shovel operator for Peabody Coal Company. He was a member of local union 1122, District 14, honored by three consecutive union presidents. He was selected as the grand marshal for the Peabody Coal Mine celebration, 2002, and grand marshal for the Labor Harvest Picnic Parade in 2007.

Dutch and Bonnie bought the Flying D Ranch north of Cedar Vale after retirement in 1978. They belonged to the Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers and the American Legion Post #10 in Winfield, Kansas. Dutch enjoyed playing the fiddle and dancing with Bonnie. He was baptized in 1965 at Deepwater Christian Church in Missouri, where he served as both Sunday School Teacher and Elder.
