Obituary

Larry Eugene Womacks, 91, of Atlanta, Kansas, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 2, 2026, at the Kansas Veterans Home.

Born May 16, 1935, the son of Eugene and Louise (Kampschroeder) Womacks. He was raised on a farm east of Atlanta. Larry graduated from Atlanta High School in 1953. He used to brag that he graduated in the top five of his class; there were seven in his graduating class. He then attended and graduated from Kansas State University in 1957.

He married Ruby Ellen McDonald on May 26, 1957. Then Uncle Sam beckoned, and he was off to Korea with the United States Army. Upon returning from his service, he farmed and ranched east of Atlanta.

Things got tough on the farm in the 1980’s (they are always tough on the farm), and he started working for outside ag-related companies. He loved talking to people, therefore, these employment opportunities were perfect for him.

He was active in the community, serving on several boards which supported the Atlanta and Burden communities, as well as Cowley County.

Another passion for him was his faith in Jesus Christ. In addition to sharing his faith in conversations, he had stints as the pastor in Maple City and then on to the church in DeGraff. He truly cared for people and their well-being.

Larry is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby Ellen Womacks of Atlanta; his sister Jeanine Thompson of Mt Juliet, TN; his sons Todd of Wichita; Mark (Michelle) of Atlanta; Kirk (Nicci) of Pevely, MO; his grandchildren, Nicole (Matt), Kyle (Chandler), Kerstin (Lance), Micah (Alejandra), Matthew (Gera), Blake (Anna), Brady (Cailey), Cara; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Carmen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Atlanta Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8 PM. The family will greet visitors from 5:30 to 7 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Larry’s name for the Atlanta Fire District. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
