Larry D. Thiel, 79, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Friday morning, February 14, 2020 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover.

Born March 5, 1940 in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of Floyd A. and Margaret B. (Somers) Thiel. He was raised in the Wilmot area and attended elementary school in Burden. Larry then attended Winfield High School graduating in 1958. He worked on a farm for Vernon Drake before joining the United States Navy in January 1963. Larry proudly served his country in Vietnam, receiving his honorable discharge in June 1967.

He was united in marriage to Charlotte Defore on June 8, 1968 in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield where Larry began working as a heavy equipment operator for LG Pike Construction in 1969. He remained at LG Pike for over 42 years, retiring in 2011.

Larry was a member of the American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544. He enjoyed attending rodeos, horse races, and his grandchildren's sporting events and band concerts.

His family includes his wife Charlotte of Winfield; his sons, Eric Thiel and wife, Amy of Winfield; Barry Thiel and Sami Smith of Winfield; his brother Daryl Thiel and wife, Marcia of Winfield; his sister Barbara Belveal and husband, Loyd of Wichita; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Thiel of Winfield; his grandchildren, Trey Thiel, Brylee Thiel, Kyson Thiel; his step grandchildren, Chase Constance and wife, Hannah; Jacob Davis; and his step great grandchildren, Declan and Liam.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a brother Ronald L. "Ronnie" Thiel.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 that evening.

A memorial has been established in Larry's name for the American Legion Post 10. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
