Obituary

Larry Gene Rhodes, 79, of Oxford, Kansas, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024, at his home.

Born February 27, 1944, in Winfield, he was the son of Doren Lee and Frieda Marie (Hostetter) Rhodes.  Larry was raised in the Cowley County area, attending school in Cambridge and later in Dexter.  In 1962, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1968.

On November 27, 1968, Larry was united in marriage to Carolyn Sue Garber at Central Baptist Church in Winfield.  The couple made their first home in Winfield.  Larry worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years.  He retired from the Benton County Road Department in Arkansas in July 2012 as a road grader operator.  The couple moved back to Kansas in 2015, and made their home in Oxford.

Larry was a member of the Baptist Church in Gentry, Arkansas.  More recently, he attended First Baptist Church of Burden.  He enjoyed his church family, vegetable gardening, and fishing.  He especially loved visiting and was given the gift of gab.

His family includes his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Rhodes of Oxford; his children, Roger Gene Rhodes and wife, Julie of Stevensville, MT; Rhonda Sue Sawyer and husband, Jeff of Mulvane; his grandchildren, Britnee Jessop and husband, Theodore; Jordan Rhodes; Sarah Rhodes; Jacob Rhodes; his great granddaughter Oaklyn Jessop; and his brother, Robert L. Rhodes of Decatur, AR.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a brother David Rhodes and sister Betty Kenum.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the First Baptist Church in Burden under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.  Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Larry's name for Disabled American Veterans.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
