Obituary

Larry Gene Mossman, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday morning, July 22, 2023.

Born December 17, 1935, at a home in Eskridge, Kansas, he was the son of Harry and Neva Mossman.

Larry was married to Marjorie Mossman on June 1, 1956, at the Methodist Church in Eskridge. They resided there until 1957 when they moved to Corona, California. After the death of Marjorie's mother, the couple returned to Eskridge, and in 1959, Larry joined the Kansas Highway Patrol.

His job led the family to Independence, Kansas from 1959-71 before a transfer to Winfield. After 25 years of service, he retired from the KHP in 1986, at which time he briefly owned and operated an automobile business before moving into full-time retirement.

Prior to that retirement, Larry played a pivotal role in the formation of the Kansas State Troopers Association during the late 1970's and early 1980's. The KSTA gave voice to the rank and file in the patrol, and Larry was elected the organization's first president. The KSTA still thrives today.

Larry's interests and abilities were diverse. He excelled in automotive knowledge but was adept at all kinds of repair and home projects.

In addition to his duties as a KHP trooper, Larry taught pursuit driving for the patrol. That skill led to one of his favorite hobbies, dirt-track racing. For several years he served as mechanic and co-driver on a super modified car that was owned by Dr. Bruce Wells, also of Winfield. The car made regular appearances at tracks in Dewey, Oklahoma, and Caney, Kansas, but also raced at Hutchinson, Wichita and Enid, Oklahoma.

He also was a self-taught musician who learned to play the guitar, mandolin and fiddle, all quite proficiently. Later in his life, he took a great interest in bluegrass music and traveled with Marjorie to numerous festivals in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri where he routinely jammed with other musicians.

At that same time, Larry and Marjorie bought a fifth-wheel camper and traveled extensively throughout the Midwest. They also took group trips to New England and Alaska.

He came to salvation in Jesus Christ around the age of 50 and became a serious student of the Bible and reformed theology often tackling difficult topics and challenging reading. He and Marjorie were active members at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship in Winfield for many years.

He is survived by his half-brother Rick Coffin of Hilton Head, SC; his two children, Kenny Mossman and his wife, Amy, of Carnegie, OK; and Sharon Mossman-Seck and her husband, Michael, of Kansas City, MO; his four grandchildren, Scott Mossman of Kansas City, MO; Matt Mossman of Oklahoma City, OK; Hannah Murphy of Oklahoma City, OK; and Andrew Mossman of Carnegie, OK; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and step-father, Gerald Coffin, Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, who passed away August 8, 2013.

The memorial service for Larry Mossman will be Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 10 a.m., at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship in Winfield. The family will observe a private graveside service. Miles Funeral Service is handling the arrangements.
