Dr. Larry D. Helzer, 75, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away June 15, 2018 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Born January 5, 1943 in Ransom, Kansas, he was the son of Jake and Bessie (Brown) Helzer. He was raised and received his education in Dighton graduating from Dighton High School. Larry earned his Bachelor's Degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. He furthered his education receiving his Master's from Western State and his Doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado.
He was united in marriage to LuCretia Gatschet on December 21, 1963. The couple moved to Gunnison, Colorado where Dr. Helzer worked as a History teacher in 1966. He was a school principal for different schools including Crested Butte, Platteville, and Colorado Springs until moving to Winfield in 1985 and being the principal at Lowell Elementary from 1985 until 1990. Larry was also a coach of multiple sports including football, basketball, track and golf. In 1990, he began working for High Touch designing education software. He retired in 2010.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. He was also an Eagle Scout and enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and visiting historical sites. He worked at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival for many years tallying the contests. He especially loved spending time with his family.
His family includes his wife Lu Helzer of Winfield; his children, Jim Helzer and wife, Marcy of Towanda; Jenny Helzer of Overland Park; Michael Helzer of Council Grove; his brother Jerry Helzer and wife, Peggy of Newallah, OK; and four grandsons and two great grandsons.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a sister, Kay Ruth.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church. Interment will be at 3:00 P.M. that afternoon at Roselawn Memorial Park in Salina. A visitation will take place at Miles Funeral Service on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
